Modern Warfare 2 - Xbox360 - Ps3 - P.C

Modern Warfare 2-Xbox 360, PS3, PC

So, the biggest game of 2009, in a review. That’s harder than it sounds.

Since you are on this site then it is a safe bet that you know how Modern Warfare 1 blasted onto the scene in 2007. Reviews were raving; here was a game that challenged the gaming juggernaut that was Halo 3. And with good reason for Modern Warfare was a spectacular game all around. While the single player was short, it was also relentless, interesting and just damn fun. But it was the multiplayer which really lit the bomb. Even to this day it is still one of the most played games on Live.

But enough about Modern Warfare, this review is about the fresh new beast. Modern Warfare 2 has arrived and it was well worth the wait. Veterans of MW will recognise the style of the campaign and the drip feed of multiplayer while marvelling at the new spec-ops mode.

Story/Campaign

Disappointed by the short story of MW? Sorry but MW2 wont rectify that. It generally clocks in at around 6 hours. However that being said, while the campaign lasts, it is tremendous fun. There are some missions that are absolutely gold such as “Cliffhanger” and “The Gulag.” Other missions feel similar to MW. There was a similar level to “All Ghillied Up” for instance. That doesn’t mean that Infinity Ward is recycling old levels though. It’s still fresh, unique and delivers a new experience. As for the actual story; it was brilliant. As in previous COD games, there are multiple characters you play as throughout the story. The problem with this is; I only really felt a connection with 2 of them. I won’t say who they are but the other 2 characters just didn’t hold that emotional connection. The story unfolds really nicely; there are twists and backstabs and the final scene in particular can really tug at your heartstrings. The ending I really enjoyed but I can confidently say that some will despise it. Let’s say that one of the two storylines tied up properly. But that’s enough griping. Seriously, the campaign is excellent, well presented and does the series proud.

Multiplayer

MW veterans will recognise this instantly. On the surface it is still the same game that you have been playing for 2 years. You begin at level 1 and start to work your way up to level 70 by playing in matches. As you level up you unlock more weapons and RPGish perks. Levelling up is much more satisfying this time around. Rather than just earning points for killing people there are also extra points for things like the first kill in the game and stopping an enemy short of a killstreak. This is a good addition as it adds more variety to the online play. And as for variety, there is a heck of a lot of it. On the surface there is a large amount of game types to play. Some are what you know and love from online gaming while others can be a bit different. And of course there is all the customisation for the various weapons. In MW 1 you could choose between a red dot sight, silencer or ACOG scope for each gun. In MW 2 thermal vision, rapid fire, holographic sight, FMJ and akimbo are added to the list along with a few other doozys. There are less perks this time round but they are more fleshed out. For example, stopping power gives you more damage against enemies; but if you earn a certain amount of kills with stopping power then it will be upgraded to stopping power pro which increases damage against vehicles. This all lets you mould your character into something you would rather play as. However, while all the additions to weapons and perks is extremely good maybe some customisation to your actual character would breathe even more into the game. However I am rather unsure about this as seeing 10 people run around in stupidly bright colours as seen in Vegas 2 would look awful for MW 2. The entire online side is just so much better balanced this time round. This begins with the secondary weapons. In MW 1, your secondary was a pistol. Now in MW 2, shotguns have been moved to a secondary position. Also added are the likes of machine pistols and javelins/stingers/big massive grenade launchers. This is excellent for snipers as they now no longer have to survive on just a pistol if someone gets too close. Kill streaks are more implemented this time round. In MW 1 there was a reward at 3,5 and 7. Now there are various rewards that go up to 15 and then 1 at 25. However you are still only allowed 3 of them. So now you have the option of choosing which ones to unlock and equip. I won’t spoil the surprise of what you can get at 25 but rest assured you will be blown away. Another new addition is the inclusion of death streaks. Obviously these are the opposite of kill streaks; die a certain number of times without killing and get a reward to help you recover. Martyrdom and Last Stand have been moved to this position along with newbies like Copycat and Painkiller. To top it off, all these features have been incorporated into the offline play for split screen and system link for the guys who don’t like to go online. Now there is one more thing I would like to mention. There is now a 3rd person mode for both online and offline play. This is available in certain playlists online and can be turned on in match settings offline. In short, it’s a lot of fun and makes me play in a new way compared to the 1st person mode. My issue with it is: it looks lazily done. The characters don’t really have a sense of urgency with their movements and leg movements look like something out of Fallout 3’s 3rd person. Compared to how the characters out of Gears of War move it looks rather rubbish. However, any problems are quickly forgotten as you actually start playing.

Maps

Now I am making a special paragraph for the maps because they fully deserve it. They are all brilliantly designed and each work for specific playing styles. From the tiny map of Rust to the massive open map of Favela which encourages being on the roofs, there is sure to be a map which you will love.

Special Ops

Another new addition to the COD series. In World at War, the Nazi zombie mode was a nice new feature, but that was all it was, a feature. This is a fully realised and separate game mode that kicks Nazi zombies on its ass. There are 22 separate missions in here with 3 stars that can be earnt on each. What’s more is that all of these missions have been designed with co-op in mind. And co-op is where it is truly at. Pushing through with a friend in tow is just so much fun compared to going it alone. All of these missions truly feel unique even though a couple use the same locations. I you loved the AC-130 from MW 1 then you will be delighted to know there is a mission dedicated to it while you protect your friend on the ground. Other missions have you shooting from a helicopter, creeping past enemy patrols in the snow, an arcade style shootout and racing snowmobiles. This mode certainly does not take a secondary role compared to the campaign and multiplayer. It is just as much a proper mode as they are. My only complaint is that 4 player co-op would be incredible rather than just 2.

Modern-Warfare-2.jpg

I’m reminded of a time about 6 months ago now. My friend and I were walking and discussing what improvements could be made to MW 1 to make MW 2 even better. In truth we had an extremely short list. Basically more customisation for guns, more maps and co-op was all we could come up with. We really couldn’t come up with more. What Infinity Ward has done is such an improvement over what was an amazing game to start with. The multiplayer has about a million little refinements, the campaign is cinematic and awesome and spec-ops is incredible. The graphics of course are gorgeous, voices are believable and sound is spot on. This all makes the game incredibly hard to score. In my opinion, this is the best shooter currently available. I have never given a 10 before to any game I have ever reviewed over the years. Some see the 10 as indicating a flawless game. I don’t see it this way. I see a 10 as a game which has been finished to an incredible level which most don’t achieve.

So for the first time in my reviewing history I score this game >

Fallout 3 - PC - 360 - PS3

Fallout 3 - PC, Xbox 360, PS3 - 2008

If you have played the previous series, playing this, you’ll probably end up with a question like this: “is this what I expected?” well actually no, the game has almost the same story with the previous ones, and fallout 3 has some minor problems, but lets take them all one by one.

Starting the game, you’ll feel it real, playing as a child, as a teen and as an adult, in encounters every time you succeed a vats finishing shot your enemies’ heads pop-off or you dismember them and so on, while attempting a skill(like hack) you actually attempt the skill in a “mini-game” you actually do something and take the risk on your own, and if you fail you can’t try again (except if you have a certain perk), the graphic are cool. Your mission is to find your father, who is a runaway citizen from vault 101 which human created to keep them safe from radiation, no one would enter or leave vault 101. Following your dad you end up in a huge wasteland, wondering around and ask information about your dads’ position. You’ll enter in many towns, you chose to help people (good karma) or harm people (bad karma), but the problem is: IT DOESN’T MATTER IF IT’S A GOOD KARMA OR BAD! You can actually change your karma in an instance just by doing some minor repeatable quests, so the whole karma system is ****.

Out in the wastelands you’ll encounter random enemies. So you have this first person view or third person view, you aim and shoot, and there is the V.A.T.S. system. A system that by pressing one button you stop the time, and you have the ability to choose certain parts of your enemy (like torso, head, arms), select how many times you want to hit, and then the computer takes the control of your player and it takes the shots for you. The slow motion graphics and the zoom and the nice point of view actions is something fascinating, but imagine in a fps game the special combat action is to freeze the time and to leave the computer do everything, and yes computer has a better change of hitting the target, and I think it will increase the possibility of a critical strike. And the item system, while encountering enemies you can press another button, and the time stops AGAIN, you can heal yourself, buff up yourself, change weapon, and there you go! a new look.

Ok the items, the majority of the items are useless pieces of junk but most of them are very expensive from ashtrays to conductors. When you kill an enemy, you can take everything from them and then you can violate their bodies, but anyway, you have a weigh capacity, and after killing 5 raiders, you are full and you walk really slow and you can’t fast traveler to a city, so you have to throw something, go back to the city, store the items, come back and take the others, this is NOT fun. Then you probably say “why hell you take those items” well if you won’t take them you’ll have no money to repair, buy ammo, etc. From the other hand the game allow you to kill anyone, you can actually massacre the whole city and take EVERYTHING but you will lose karma (something you don’t care) and you lose quest (= a huge amount of exp).

Skills and perks, skills are essential, and as a good role-playing game you’ll have to choose 3-4 main skills to advance. You can choose to use small guns and hack computers, picklock and science and the list goes on, but you can’t have them all balanced, actually the game always has 2-3 options, like if you can’t picklock the strongbox, you can hack the computer and unlock it from there, and if you have balanced skills then you will end up doing nothing. You can choose one perk per level, perks is like feat in D&D something bonus, basically more skill points. Perks can lead to a good combination of perks and skills mixed up, there is a good amount of perks for every type of a character you wanna be.

Npc and every day life, THEY ARE TERRIBLE, you can actually go to everyone’s house and steal anything you want in front of their own eyes, and they will do nothing to stop you, and then you talk to them and they are like “hey my friend, did you find your dad yet?” not to mention the pickpocket thing, the assassination, you can almost kill one by one each citizen in a town and citizens DON’T CARE about it. And your enemies are like 3 types? There are super mutants, orcs in rpg language, raiders, bandits in rpg language and some annoying radiation **** “animals”.

My personal opinion is that after playing a while, its kind of feels like a routine, encountering the same enemies, talking to the same voices, visiting the same wasteland fields. And the worse is that the game has NO bosses, there are some mini bosses whom you’ll enjoy, but there are no main bosses, and I was waiting for a great boss and I saved all my nukes, just to find NOTHING. Fallout 3 has some absolutely pointless and stupid skills, imagine a wasteland full of creature with radiation, and there is Jackie Chan trying to save the world?! With what kind of logic would a man fist fight some gigantic mutants, or gargantuan ants FULL OF RADIATION, and not only the idea, but each mutant has a MINIGUN with him. Or there is melee weapon skill, almost the same thing, but there are no good melee weapons in fallout 3, there are some kind of swords, but then you’ll come up with a common weapon called the ripper, which is more effective than any other sword. And the ripper (a one-handed chainsaw sword) strikes so fast, that the melee skill is USELESS. The game tried to put music, which sucks btw, and the music never change, you’ll go into combat, you will go fatal life but the music remains the same, something in modern gaming is bad. To sum up, if you enjoyed playing the old fallout games, you will enjoy this one, if you like oblivion (people says that fallout 3 is oblivion with guns) you will probably enjoy it too. This game could be better, vats system really takes you out of the fps gaming. I enjoyed fallout by killing EVERYONE.

fink injured in motorcycle accident

Helo you probably think that this would be written by fink. But im sorry to inform you that he has been injured in a motorcycle crash and is in the hospital. at around 6 pm yesterday he was riding down state road 82 about 5 miles from our house when a oncoming car came into his lane and forced him off the road. when the bike went off the road he was ejected from the bike slid along the grass for about 40 yards and hit a tree. a passing car stopped and called an ambulance. at that point i recieved a call from the sheriff officer that responded to the accident telling me that the were taking him to lee memorial hospital and that he would be receiving treatment there. he underwent surgery to stop the internal bleeding due to his lung being punctured. he also has multipul fractures including 6 broken ribs, collar bone, both bones in left forearm left hand, right hand right forearm and right femur. the doctors have some concerns that he could have damaged his right kidney. right now he is in stable condition and doing well. when he woke up i asked him what he remembered. and he told me that he remembered going off the road and hitting the ground. after that he remembers tumbling and then waking up in the hospital. He asked me to do this so that you guys would know what is going on. He tells me all the time about some of the people that he talks too on here. and holds some of the relationships he has formed here in high regards. my daughters and i hope that he will out of the hospital soon and i will keep you updated as i can. sorry if i didn't put this in the right section. he complains of that when he does his mod thing on here. lol

Post subject: SEO settings result in 404 error

Hi,

Joomla (1.5.6) has been working fine with all 3 SEO settings ON in my website. The server had the PHP running as an Apache mod. After I got my server changed to be able to use FastCGI, though perhaps not related to FastCGI, I get 404 error with some pages, and SEF URLs are not displayed. I have been unsuccessfully trying different SEO Settings and changing .htaccess so far, following instructions from this forum.

This is what I found:
Regardless of the SEO setting, articles which are 'uncategorised' eg. pages like about.html always work. When 'Search Engine Friendly URLs' & 'Use Apache mod_rewrite' are ON the SEF URLs are displayed correctly, eg.
http://www.mysite.com.au/about.html
And, when these settings are OFF, the same URL is diplayed, as expected:
http://www.mysite.com.au/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=65

However, articles that have been assigned to various Sections and Categories do not display the SEF urls regardless of these settings. They are always like: http://www.mysite.com.au/noideas&catid= ... &Itemid=70. And, with these 2 SEO settings ON, these pages return with 404 error. I have also tried with a clean install of Joomla and the sample pages like "Welcome to Joomla" always have 404 error.

When these two settings are OFF, these pages reroute/forward to the frontpage again (browser displays the URL, eg: http://www.mysite.com.au/index.php?opti ... &Itemid=65) and no 404 error. The actual page is not displayed.

htaccess.txt has been renamed to .htaccess, and is located in the root. Joomla is installed in the root. Rewriterule (.*) http://www.google.com takes you to Google.
Here is the htaccess file and info from JST-post. See the error messages displayed (in red) in the 404 page. Thank you in advance for your help.

Jungle Games Were Never So Fun! A Review of Timon and Pumbaa's Jungle Games

the joy of playing has just arrived. Timon & Pumbaa's Jungle Games is geared toward the younger kids, but has more than enough fun and entertainment for gamers of all ages. When you first begin the game, you're treated to a fantastic introduction starring, of course, Timon and Pumbaa. They take the player to their Jungle Arcade where there are 5 games available for play. Most of the games are familiar adaptations of older arcade hits. With fancy graphics and humor only Disney could think of, each game is a joy to play.

The main menu is where the adventures begin. The menu is crawling with animals and bugs. The player can click on practically anything on the screen and something will happen. It's almost a game within itself. From the menu are the 5 selectable games. When one of the games is chosen, Timon and Pumbaa race over to the game you've selected and explain how to play the game. It's pretty hilarious to hear these two try and explain the games. It's like a scene right from the Lion King. Each game is different from the other as detailed below.

The first game I tried out was Jungle Pinball. The first thing that was noticeable were the detailed graphics. They are extremely clear and vibrant, as if they were taken right from the cartoon. The controls are simple enough to understand. The right and left flippers are used by pressing the "/" and "z" keys respectively. The pill bug, Disney's variation of the pinball, is launched by pressing the "enter" key. The game starts you off with 3 pill bugs and the object is to rack up as many points as possible. There are many hidden areas and bonuses to uncover. Timon, Pumbaa and a host of other characters appear as targets. Complete with zany sound effects and voices, this game kept me coming back for more. Pinball has never been so much fun!

Burper was the next game I tried out. Pumbaa is the controllable character in this addictive game. He's located at the bottom of the playing field while Timon is nearby shaking a tree. All sorts of goodies fall from the tree and it's Pumbaa's job to prevent the objects from hitting the ground. He does this by using his powerful burps. You gain points by hitting the different bugs before they touch the ground. If they do make it to the ground, they will come after you. You can stop the bugs by hitting them with Pumbaa's tail. If he gets hit by one of the falling objects or bitten by a bug too many times, you'll lose one of your tries. As in pinball, you only get 3 tries, so be careful! When you have managed to stop a certain amount of bugs, you will advance to the next level where they begin to fall at a faster rate. See how far you can get!

The next game brought back some memories of the arcade classic, Frogger. While not exactly the same, Hippo Hop shares some of the same play mechanics. The object is to help Timon cross the river with an ingredient that Pumbaa needs for his barbecue. The ingredients are placed on the logs and animals that are floating on the river. Pumbaa yells which one he needs, and you must leap from obstacle to obstacle to get the ingredient and deliver it to him on the other side. If you slip into the water or run out of time, you lose a try. You have 5 tries per game, so be careful.

In the mood for a puzzle game? If so, Bug Drop is Disney's version of Tetris. This is the one game that's 2 player simultaneous. You can challenge one of your friends or play against Timon or Pumbaa. Different colored bugs fall from the top of the screen. By lining up 4 of the same colored bugs, they will disappear. If you can manage to take out more than 4 bugs at once, you'll send some over to your friend. Don't let them stack up to the top, or the game will be over. Oh yeah, don't be surprised if Timon and Pumbaa give a little advice to you while you play the game. This game will have you playing for hours. Just like Tetris, you can't stop playing!

The final game available is Slingshooter. This is probably the simplest game to play. The object is to sling berries at the targets that Timon and Pumbaa have made up. Also, take aim at the hyenas and other scary beasts that lurk in the jungle. Be sure not to hit Pumbaa, Timon or their friends. The action is fast, so stay on your toes!

All 5 games are a blast to play. Each game keeps score and if you obtain a high score, you're name can be entered. If you're number 1, you'll become King of the jungle games. Each game is simple to learn and loaded with fun. Younger kids will especially enjoy this game. I soon found out that it's more than enough fun for gamers of all ages when my mom and dad sat down and played for a couple of hours. The graphics are excellent and the voices are straight from the movie. Each game will keep you coming back for more. This title has it all, and then some. It really is amazing that this is the first game Disney Interactive has made! They could have fooled me. Luckily they have many more titles scheduled to come out. Timon & Pumbaa's Jungle Games is highly recommended and great gaming for the entire family. You simply can't go wrong with this purchase! 'Nuff said!

getting back into the swing of things

Oh, it has been so long since I have found moments of time to indulge myself in blogging. I really do feel bad, but I had so many other things going on that I had to put in front of my "blogging" ... I really do miss it. I have a mind full of excuses for you that seem to justify it all, but I will save you and just try to find a few moments a week to start up again.

So a lot has changed since I last, truly blogged.

We traveled a lot this summer! Ray and Ruth took us to Colorado Springs, and I fell in love with the place, I truly want to go back there every year which I am sure will not happen! I took Emily to Georgia to see her Uncle Scott and had a lot of fun. And, I took Eva to Michigan to visit our best friends Lisa & Hannah.

Camden turned 8 this past summer, and he is already half way to 9! Eva turned 4 in October, and Emily is almost 7 so things are just really changing here.

Camden is in third grade this year and is enjoying chess club, reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Chronicles of Narnia. Emily is in first grade and she is just full of life! She loves school and really does want to grow up and teach Kindergarten someday. She too loves to read and dance. This weekend she has cheer leading camp and is very excited as this is her first year to do it. Eva keeps me busy, three days a week she goes to a preschool at a church in town and the rest of the time she is usually beside me. She is in her first year of Dance and is just loving it, she can't wait until Dance recital in May!

So that should catch you up a little bit, and I will try to post some photos about all of the above things that have gone by, and hopefully manage to keep you up to date!

Mostly I really want to do this for my Aunt Beryl as I know how much she enjoys seeing the kids and knowing what is going on. My Aunt is fighting Cancer and after a year will finally be seen at Cancer Treatment Center in a few weeks, I am praying for more answers for her so that she can feel better. I know God had great plans for her still! Love you Aunt Beryl!
